Hello everyone. My name is Karen Wasylowski, and I am the author of “The Pride and Prejudice Family Saga” series, a continuation of Jane Austen’s remarkable work. I have to say it is wonderful to be back with my Austen Author friends. I began with this group way, way back in 2011 when my first book, Darcy and Fitzwilliam, a Gentleman and an Officer – and the beginning of my series – was published. I was an accountant for many years, not a writer. That I was able to create one novel, let alone two more after that, was a dream come true.
So, it was with immense pride and shock that I released my Fourth Book of the series – SAINTS AND SINNERS – on Valentine’s Day this year!
While all the books in this series can easily be read alone, Saints and Sinners does continue a story from Book Three, Wives and Lovers. Poor Matthew and Bridget, I couldn’t leave well enough alone with them, I had to finish the circle. Also, his twin brother Mark has some dangerous experiences with thieves and the hospitals for the poor in London in Victorian England. That’s a very odd thing about writing. Some stories have a life of their own and they never let you go.
Saints and Sinners begins in 1861, at the time of Prince Albert’s death at 42 years of age. The country went into deep mourning at the loss of their often misunderstood Prince when even Prime Minister Palmerston, Albert’s one-time adversary, ‘had been forced to concede the Prince’s value to the nation in promoting British prestige and interest in the royal courts of Europe, as well as his beneficial effect on the Queen and her conduct of royal business.’ (Magnificent Obsession by Helen Rappaport).
At that very same time Great Britain and America were involved in an incident that could have led to war between the two countries, the result of the American seizure of a British packet ship, The Trent. It happened that two representatives of the Confederacy were on board, making their way across the Atlantic to gather support from Europe for their cause. As my story begins, the Darcy’s daughter and son-in-law are visiting business interests in Canada putting them in harm’s way, while Fitzwilliam’s son is Captain of a British warship. Britain was outraged by The Trent Affair as it was referred to, accusing the United States of violating the neutrality of the seas. Prince Albert, a deathly ill man at the time, stepped in with his usual calm and helped save the day.
So, these are the events around which the Darcy and Fitzwilliam families confront passion, love, hate, separation and the sheer frustration of family in my latest work. I only hope you enjoy reading ‘Saints and Sinners’ as much as I enjoyed writing it.
