Which Minor P&P Character Are You?
For me, one of the most striking features of Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice was her use of vivid, interesting secondary characters. While I loved reading about the romance between Lizzie and Darcy and between Jane and Bingley, I was equally fascinated by the characters around them.
What happened to Charlotte Lucas? Did she stay married to the odious Mr. Collins? And why was Caroline Bingley such a nasty piece of work? Did she ever learn from her mistakes and take a better path? I wanted to know what became of the minor characters that Austen created.
I also always believed that both Charlotte and Caroline got a bum rap. Charlotte had to marry Mr. Collins. Yech. And Caroline has been vilified for years. I don’t believe Jane Austen wrote her as an evil character, but more as another female victim of society. She was only doing what Polite society had taught her, and I always wanted to give her the chance to make a different choice after she lost her bid for Darcy. This explains why I wrote Charlotte Collins and Caroline Bingley, which will be out as soon as my proofer has finished.
And now I want to know, which minor Pride and Prejudice character do you most resemble?

Truly? I’d be Charlotte. Practical and not expecting great things.
I’d say I’m most like Charlotte, but the quiz says I’m Mary. Pardon me while I go find some sermons to read….
Sermons are good for the improvement of the mind. Yes, that’s it.
I am Mary Bennet. Yep, I can see that!
Very fun Jennifer! I love these quizzes.
Another Mary! Lots of big readers seem to get Mary.
I’m Mary Bennet!
I saw it coming a mile off!
Wow, lots of Marys. When I posted it on my blog, everyone seemed to get Charlotte.
I’m also Mary…and I expected it. Not happy about it though.
Oh dear, but you’re not an exaggerated Mary, I’m sure. For instance, I doubt you have been quoting from Fordyce’s Sermons lately.
I’m Kitty! I knew that would happen as I am very much a follower!
I think Kitty has a sweet personality. Just like you!
I am Mary, as I expected, but all my life its the Lizzys I’ve admired.
I’m Mary Bennet. I thought I might be Charlotte or Jane. Personally, I used to be Mary Bennet, but now I’m closer to Lady Catherine.
I’m Charlotte, but that’s about right. Were this a Persuasion test, I’d be Nurse Rook. I’m very good at listening while I look busy.
I loved all the comments here. Especially about Lady Catherine and Nurse Rook. (but I thought she was a gossip) smiles….
As I told Jennifer on another site I ended up Kitty. I was surprised at so many Charlotte’s.
I got Charlotte – I would not have picked that though -oh dear, think I need to do more reading from her point of view – I usually overlook her.
Yea, Charlotte!! I was worried it would be Caroline! I never thought I’d be excited to be Charlotte Collins.
I think the Mary’s just got to the post faster!
I’m a Charlotte! I may have the personality, but I’m not stuck with a Collins! Thank goodness!!!!!
We will start seeing the Caroline’s later in the week and may never see the Lydia’s. They are too busy chasing uniforms! lol
I had to pick some answers that didn’t really fit me but came closer than any other action. I came up Charlotte, which I would consider quite a compliment but I can’t stop shuddering over the idea of being attached for life to Mr. Collins. Thank you for the nightmares that are certain to follow! … I think I prefer all the other Austen character quizzes I’ve taken. I always come up Lizzy.
much more pleasant dreams from that result!
I’m a Charlotte Collins but was hoping for a Kitty Bennett! I love to dance but love to read even more. Lucky for me I found my Mr Darcy…
I took the quiz at your blog and came out as Charlotte though I’m not so much like her. I believe I’m a romantic so I won’t settle for someone like Mr Collins. If given a choice to live her life in her era, I would prefer to wait for someone better who comes along and if not, spinster it is.
I also posted the quiz on my blog. Take a look here if you want.
I got Charlotte. Yikes. I guess that means I also got Mr. Collins! Thanks for the fun, Jennifer!
Best,
Susan
