Syrie James celebrates “The Missing Manuscript of Jane Austen”–book launch and giveaway!

I hope you enjoyed the holidays and rang in the new year in style!

Do you like page-turning romance with a bit of mystery? Did you ever wish that Jane Austen had written just one more book? Well, have I got the book for you! My new novel The Missing Manuscript of Jane Austen, which debuted on December 31st, is two books in one: a brand new Austen story wrapped inside a modern romantic tale. I think you’ll love it.

The book begins in the present with Samantha McDonough, a young university librarian who finds a clue to the existence of an unknown Jane Austen manuscript. She embarks on a quest that will bring her to a beautiful, centuries-old English estate, a handsome, charming gentleman, and a carefully hidden manuscript that–when they find it–is unmistakably Austen’s.

Samantha and Anthony are immediately absorbed in the story of Rebecca Stanhope, daughter of a small-town rector, who is about to encounter some bittersweet truths about life and love. As they read the newly discovered tale from the past, a new one unfolds in the present–a story that changes both of their lives forever. The Austen manuscript, entitled The Stanhopes, is inspired by a famous comedic outline that Jane Austen wrote herself, Plan of a Novel.

It was such fun to climb into Jane Austen’s head again to write this book. I’m thrilled to say that Austenprose gave it 5 stars and deemed it “swoon worthy,” Kirkus Reviews gave it a starred review and called it a “richly imagined Jane Austen ‘road novel’ and “a page turner,” and My Jane Austen Book Club said: “Syrie James has surpassed herself… it’ll be one of your favourite reads in 2013!” I hope that’s true!

The fact that the novel within the novel was inspired by Jane Austen’s own outline is almost irresistible to me. It sounds fantastic and the review at Austenprose makes it a must have! :) I can’t wait to read it!

    Enjoyed the post!

  • Sharon Lathan says:

Syrie, this is so exciting! I am thrilled for you, and SO happy all of us at Austen Authors can share in your newest release.

I loved hearing about this novel while we were at the Chapman University Austen Panel Discussion last September. Your passion and knowledge was readily apparent, and mesmerizing. I have no doubt that everyone who reads what you have to say about this book will “hear” the same and be wildly inspired to dash out and buy it so they can know the whole story!

Best of luck, Syrie. And have a fabulous time celebrating your release. We will do our best to keep the party happening.

I really enjoyed Nocturne. I started reading it in a Christmas Day and finished it the following day. I just couldn’t put it down!

  • AngieK says:

I was lucky enough to get this as a Christmas present – yeah, me!

  • Lúthien84 says:

Heartiest congratulations to Syrie on your latest release.

I’m up for any modern romance that is beautifully written. More so when there is a ‘newly discovered’ manuscript by Jane Austen. I only hope The Stanhopes storyline is just as absorbing as other JA novels that I have read such as Pride and Prejudice and Persuasion.

  • Danielle says:

I think we all wish that Austen had the chance to write more novels and this book will give us the chance to see that. I must admit I was skeptical before I read The Lost Memoirs of Jane Austen but after reading it I LOVED it! I think you really captured the style and subtle thigns of Jane Austen. I can ‘t wait to read this one. Only I am not lending it out like I did the last one because people didn’t want to give it back. :-)

  • Susan Heim says:

This sounds like such a good book. Congratulations on its release! I can’t wait to read it!

  • Lisa S says:

I have to say that one of the most intriguing things about the story is the lost manuscript that you based on one of JA’s own outlines. Yummy! And what is this tale that is unfolding in the present?? Wonderful teaser. I’m ready to jump right in. :)

  • Margaret says:

I have been hearing wonderful things about the book via book blogs. Thank you for the giveaway!

  • Syrie James says:

Thanks so much everyone for your comments. I hope you enjoy the novel! Happy new year!

  • Vee says:

  • Patricia F. says:

Syrie this is a intriguing book I can not wait to read it

  • BeckyC says:

Congratulations on your launch! I am intrigued by the modern twist with a little mystery. I enjoyed reading Dracula, My Love and have Nocturn and Forbidden on my kindle TBR.

  • Sophia Rose says:

I loved your other books so I’m looking forward to reading this one.

    Congrats on the new release!

    Thanks for the giveaway opportunity.

  • Trai says:

This book intrigued me from the get-go because I love literary mysteries! I just love that exhilarating feeling my English major self gets from reading about digging through the relics an author left behind, discovering new things about the author and themselves in the process. :) A.S. Byatt’s Possession sparked my love of literary mysteries, and I love that there are so many talented ladies writing mysteries featuring or about Jane Austen. Yours interests me especially because, like Possession, there’s a modern-day romance attached parallel to the narrative from the past. I’d love to read this book, and thank you very much for the giveaway opportunity!

  • Lisa Wagner says:

The idea of finding a lost Austen manuscript intrigues me greatly! Would love to win a copy!

  • RedRose15 says:

Congratulations! This book is added to my neverending wish list. I personally am excited for the mystery :)

  • Monica says:

I would love to be Samantha for a while, in England, Oxford, in the bookshop, holding that old book in my hand and finding Jane’s letter, discovering Jane’s lost manuscript. Yes! I am definitely going to read your book.

  • Syrie James says:

I really enjoyed hearing from you all. I had such a wonderful time writing this book. Thanks again for your support!

  • junewilliams7 says:

what intrigues me about this book in particular… is that you used Jane Austen’s own outline and you’ve studied her writing in enough depth that you can give us something that she herself might have written. Oh, how I wish Cassandra had been less efficient about destroying Jane’s letters!

Syrie, will you ever tell your family to burn any of *your* letters and notes when you die?

  • SusanD says:

I always say that one of these days someone will find a new Jane Austen manuscript in their manor attic. Can you imagine how fantastic that would be?

For that reason, this book sounds like alot of fun! Please enter me in the giveaway.

  • Congratulations on a most wonderful book release, Syrie! It goes right into my to-read pile!!! :-)

  • Kelli H. says:

Congratulations, Syrie! I have heard so many wonderful things about this book. I’m so excited to read it!!

  • Kathy says:

Looking forward to reading your book! I love Austen fiction but confess not to know very much about Jane Austen herself. Her not having ever achieved the marriage/family that she depicted for her characters is sad to me (old fashioned as that may be!). But to imagine her having fulfilling relationships with her family (detailed in her letters) and for her to have been so lively and creative is a huge draw to read more. Thanks!

  • Chelsea says:

Congratulations on your book! It sounds interesting and I have added it to my TBR List.

  • dianna a. says:

I entered the contest. i hope to win. would love to read the book. It sounds very good and I am a jaff nut

  • Karana says:

Just the thought of my favorite author having a previously unknown book that I have not read makes for an awsome plot that I will happily jump into. Plus your other books sound right up my alley.

  • Congratulations on the new release, Syrie.
