Launch for A Wife for Mr. Darcy

Goodness gracious! Time does fly. It’s only been six months since the launch of The Perfect Bride for Mr. Darcy, and here I am ready to celebrate the unveiling of A Wife for Mr. Darcy with my fellow Austen lovers!

A Wife for Mr. Darcy is a “what if.”  What if Mr. Darcy went to Longbourn the day after the assembly to apologize to Lizzy for his rude comment, and rather than demurely accepting his apology, she teases him about it? (Below is an abbreviated version of the scene.)

“Mr. Darcy, I understand you wish to speak to me,” Lizzy said.

“Yes, I do, and I thank you for receiving me.” After declining an offer of tea, he began. “Miss Elizabeth, at the assembly, you overhead a remark I made in which I stated that I chose not to dance with you because you were merely tolerable but not handsome enough to tempt me. Even if the statement had been true, it was incredibly rude to have uttered it, and I have come to apologize.”

“Your apology is accepted, Mr. Darcy, and I appreciate that you took the trouble to tell me in person that I am more than tolerable,” Lizzy said, half laughing at his clumsy effort to repair any damage resulting from his comment.

Darcy winced at her response. “I can assure you that I find you to be much more than tolerable, Miss Elizabeth. You are a very handsome woman, and I might have had an opportunity to express such a sentiment if I had sought an introduction. However, I do not have the talent of conversing easily with those whom I have never seen before, and I find I have little patience for the type of discourse one hears at these dances.”

“What type of discourse is that, Mr. Darcy?”

“The usual banter about weather and roads and other such things that are of little interest to me.” Leaning forward in his chair, he continued, “Whether it be Meryton or London, I hear the same conversations. A lady will comment on the number of couples in attendance at a dance, and the gentleman will respond by mentioning the size of the ballroom. And what, pray tell, do we learn from that exchange? One party is good with measurements, and the other can count.”

Now Lizzy laughed openly. “Sir, you mistake the purpose of such an exchange. It is certainly not about the dimensions of the room or the number of couples. The parties are merely trying to sketch each other’s character so that they might discover if this is a person they would like to get to know better.”

“But you are an intelligent woman. Do you not find the whole exercise to be tedious?”

“No, I do not, and may I add that you puzzle me. You tell me you are uncomfortable conversing with those with whom you are not acquainted, but then you complain about a lack of conversation. This puts me in mind of a gentleman I met at a card party. He said that he did not like the food and then grumbled that there was not enough of it.”

“I realize that is a contradiction,” he said, crossing and uncrossing his legs, indicating his discomfort.

“It is indeed. I take it that what you really want to do is to begin in the middle. Somehow, without benefit of introductions or the casual conversation that follows, you may come to know your party well enough to discuss weightier matters in a more intimate venue.”

Darcy nodded his head in understanding. “Do you think it is possible to overcome a bad first impression?”

“Most definitely. A more satisfactory performance will replace the previous image, and it would reflect well on you in that you recognized where you fell short and…”

“…and that I was willing to make corrections,” Darcy said, finishing her sentence. At that point he stood up. “The Bingleys and I have been invited to dine at the home of Sir William Lucas. Will you be there, Miss Elizabeth?”

“Most definitely. Charlotte Lucas is my dearest friend.”

“Then I shall look forward to having a conversation with you on a topic somewhere between the number of couples in the room and the wars on the Continent.”

After watching the gentleman ride down the lane, Jane asked her sister, “What are we to think about Mr. Darcy?”

Lizzy shook her head, confused by the whole visit. But some things were clearer. Mr. Darcy was more handsome than she had remembered and had eyes that were more green than gray, attractive legs, and a voice that was very pleasing to the ear, especially when he used it to say that she was handsome and intelligent. Because of these things, she found that her determination never to think well of him was faltering and that might not be a bad thing at all.

From that brief interchange, Darcy finds that he is smitten with Elizabeth. But there are complications—there are always complications—or it would make for a very short story. Darcy has been paying sufficient attention to a woman in London, Letitia Montford, so that there are “expectations” of an engagement. What is Darcy to do? I hope you will want to read my novel to find out.

In celebration of my launch, I am giving away one copy of A Wife for Mr. Darcy. All you have to do is answer the question: If you could have a conversation with any of Austen’s characters, who would it be? I would love to sit down with Jane Fairfax from Emma and ask what she sees in Frank Churchill (other than not having to be a governess).

Here are the rules: (1) Comment by July 12, 2011 and (2) leave your e-mail address–this is a must. That’s it. For additional opportunities to win a copy of A Wife for Mr. Darcy, please visit my blog: http://marysimonsenfanfiction.blogspot.com and click on the blog schedule in the sidebar. The winner will be announced July 13th. This giveaway is open to everyone.

I already really really really wanted to read this book but the excerpt makes me add some more “really”s! Lol I love this: “And what, pray tell, do we learn from that exchange? One party is good with measurements, and the other can count.” :D
Also Lizzy’s observations about his eyes, legs, voice, etc.

I am trying to be good and not hate Miss Montford already. Lol

  • Suzan says:

I love the sound of this work. The humor as always is incredible.

Thank you for the giveaway and especially for opening it to worldwide entries.

    Much appreciated.

My choice of a character to converse with would be Mr Bennett. He is a very minor character in Pride and Prejudice but I would love to here his views on his wife , daughters etc. I imagine he would have a different viewpoint on many of the people and events.

I can’t wait to read this book! I love this “what if” scenario. If I could have a conversation with a Jane Austen character it would be Anne from Persuasion.

I would absolutely love to speak with Fanny from Mansfield Park. What was she feeling when her mother sent her away to live with her relatives?

Mary, as you know, I’ve already read the book and was delighted with it. I love the way your mind works. As much as I would love to chat with many characters in P&P, I think I would have to sit down with young Mr. Tilney and say, ” you are a very honorable young man. But just because your dad was mean to her, it doesn’t mean you have to MARRY Miss Morland. … I just never really got his attraction to her.
    Keep those wonderful variations coming!

  • Bonnie Carlson says:

  • Colleen L says:

I can’t believe it has already been 6 months since a Perfect Bride for Mr Darcy came out! I picked that book up and B&N and it got me back into my JAFF obsession I had taken a break from for a few years. Now I have lost track of how many P&P FF works I’ve devoured since then.
Since I am a P&P nut, I would most like to speak to a character out of that story, and it would have to be Col. Fitzwilliam. I think there is much more to him beyond the uniform. Thanks for the giveaway, looking forward to reading this newest book.

I forgot to answer the question! So many good choices! I would like to have a conversation with Lizzy Bennet Darcy because I think she’d be so fun to talk to. I’d love to get the real dirt about Mr D.

Thanks for the giveaway and happy launch day!

now. if i could have a convo with any Austen character, it would definitely have to be Mr. Darcy! oh to be in the same room as the amazing, handsome, and intelligent man

Congratulations Mary! The excerpt is wonderful! Wishing you the best!

  • Mary Smonse says:

Thank you everyone for participating. I just got home from vacation, and I’m trying to catch up with everything. Pls forgive me for not answering each comment. :) Mary

    • Mary Smonse says:

This keyboard stinks. The above comment is from Mary Simonsen not Mary Smonse.

  • Mary Simonsen says:

Up to this point, we have Col. Fitzwilliam, Henry Tilney (with a possible lecture in his future), Fanny Price, Jane Fairfax, Elizabeth Bennet, Marianne Dashwood (with a possible lecture in her future), Mr. Darcy himself, Anne Elliot and Capt. Wentworth, Mr. Bennet, Lady Catherine, and for me, Mr. Knightley. Are you sure about Emma? Thanks again.

  • Beth Braun says:

You ask such good questions! At first I thought Lizzy just to get a change to pick her brain about Darcy. But I think I might really like to talk to Edmund and figure out what the heck he thought Mary Crawford was up to. Looking forward to reading your new book.

  • Stephanie L says:

Congrats on the new release! I already have the book (I pre-ordered and it came Saturday! ) but I wanted to answer the question and say I would love to sit down and talk to Mary Bennett or Anne DeBourgh. You know there has to be more in there than it is told!

  • Cyn209 says:

ARGHS!!! in my excitement, i forgot to answer your question……i would LOVE to have a conversation with ElizabethBennett, as she seems to have this calming effect, which is imperative in a good friend who will tell you the painful truth…….

  • I’m not entering the contest, but I wanted to congratulate you on your new launch! Reading the excerpt was enough to make me decide I definitely want to read the rest. :)

  • Mary, I am SO happy for you! Another book out and about that I know will be a wonderful addition to the Austen literary genre. Well done! Loved the excerpt. I love the idea of a Mr. Darcy who attempts to talk openly. Great idea! Keep up the good work and enjoy your launch celebration!

  • Luthien84 says:

Congrats, Mary on the launch of your latest novel. I’ve been pondering on my answer in reply to your question. Here goes:

I would love to sit down with Elinor Dashwood and wonder would she just stand and watch Edward’s engagement to Miss Lucy Steele without fighting for him.

    evangelineace2020(at)yahoo(dot)com

I really hope to win your novel as I have been really unlucky lately.

  • Kat says:

Loved your scene teaser so much I downloaded the ebook immediately – thanks for giving me more jaff to feed my obsession !!!

  • First I have to say that I love your excerpt and also that the voice of Laurence Olivier was totally in my head for the above speech. Hilarious that I have to assign a Mr. Darcy voice to it!

Secondly, congrats and best wishes with the new book.

I think that I would like to speak to Jane Bennet to see if she is really as sweet as she is made out to be, or whether she could be tempted into a little naughtiness once in a while. I’d love to take that girl out for a night on the town, possibly including a bit of champagne! ;)

  • BeckyC says:

I read Perfect Bride (loved it!) and most of your other books as well. I have been looking forward to this one as well! Of course, after reading your excerpt, now I can hardly wait!!! Just moved its way up to the top of my TBR.

There are many characters that I would love to have a conversation with including Elizabeth, Kitty and Anne (both of them). I would also love to chat with Colonel Fitzwilliam. I am always wanted to learn more about his character.

    Please enter my name.

  • Jane Odiwe says:

Congratulations, Mary- wishing you deserved success! I love the excerpt!

  • Rae says:

Your story sounds wonderful! Would love to read it as soon as may be!

My first choice would be to talk to Ms. Austen herself. So so many questions I’d love to ask her. But, if I had to choose just ONE character, I’d have to choose the man himself, Fitzwilliam Darcy, just for the pleasure of making his personal acquaintance. If I get a preference it would be POST Hunsford! He’d actually stoop to talk to my humble self and not snub me!

  • Rae says:

  • Margay says:

I would really love to sit down with Wickham and ask him – what’s the deal? Why’d he go after Lydia, of all the sisters, was it just because she was the easiest? And I’d want to know if he ever really loved anyone.

Would love to have a copy of your book. Thanks!

Oh, who to sit down with. Hmmm… probably Lizzy Bennet. She seems like she’d be fun to gab with. Congratulations Mary!!

  • Carolyn Eberhart says:

Congratulations, Mary. I hope your books is a big success

  • Tracy Thornton says:

Congratulations! Looking forward to this one!

I have always wanted to speak with Charlotte (Lucas) Collins….maybe to talk her out of her marriage??? Can she really be “content” with her lot?

    tracythornton@yahoo.com

  • Mary, this is one of my favorites that you’ve written, and I am so happy to see it in print! I even have a space on my shelf for it, so I will tell you that I always wanted to sit down with Charlotte Palmer and ask her what it was about Mr. Palmer that attracted her enough to marry him, and vise versa. They are a bit of an enigma to me, but great entertainment with their banter.

Thanks so much, Mary, and congratulations!

I have started reading Anne Elliot, A New Beginning, and I’m having great fun!!!!.
I would like to read your new book.
I would sit down with Mr. Collins ( for a short while, I couldn’t endure it for a long time ). I’d ask him: How did you become such a pompous and ridiculous man? , Why did you keep on proposing to Elizabeth even in the face of her repeated no-thank-yous?
