Do any of you remember playing MASH as a tween or teen? MASH, as in ‘Mansion, Apartment, Shack, House.” At least that’s what we called it. Basically, it was an elaborate eeny-meeny-miney-moe sort of game to predict your future: who you’re going to marry, where you’re going to live, how many kids you’re going to have, what city you’re going to live in, and so on. It’s typically played on paper, with neat little lists of four choices, and a spiral that grows until the player says stop, and whose lines are then counted to decide the elimination count. But my sister and I used to lie in our bunk beds at night playing an abridged version, joking and teasing each other over who we were destined to end up with.
My novel-in-progress features a single mom with a twelve-year-old daughter who’s decided to try a spot of matchmaking. So, in channeling my inner twelve-year-old, MASH memories have bubbled to the surface. Which led to thoughts of a Jane Austen style MASH, which would really need to be called something different… What about:
Hartfield…Abbey Mill Farm…Parsonage…Pemberley… or HAPP
Perfect for our Jane Austen-Style Happily Ever After. This is your chance for a future at Pemberley! Seize it!

Ready to play?? Here’s how it’s going to work… Use the Random Number Generator below to generate your count. If you don’t wish to be limited by a 2-12 range, fill in whatever you wish. Once you have your number, start at ‘HAPP,’ counting each letter once, then work your way through the rest of the mini lists until you reach your count. Cross out the selections you land on and count forward from there, starting over again at HAPP once you’ve reached the end of the lists. (You may have to jot a few notes or print this out. Please don’t let this discourage you–I’d love for you to play!) Once you’ve eliminated all but one in a list, the remaining selection is yours. Repeat this process until you’ve narrowed all the lists down to a single selection, and then let us all know what you get!!
I’ll go first. My random number is 12. My future (assuming I counted right…12 is tough to keep track of…)
I’ll be married to Darcy, who looks like Alan Rickman, and living in a parsonage with my aging father. We’ll have one child and no income. (Egad!) My best friend is Jane Fairfax…perhaps she’ll let us use her piano… Sigh…even with no money, it still looks lovely!
I hope you’ll participate! I had lots of fun with this!
