Hurricane Sandy Relief, Jane Austen style

Writers aren’t the most useful people to have around during a tragedy like the one that’s been unfolding in New York, New Jersey, and elsewhere after Hurricane Sandy.  Our books may be a great distraction, but they can’t pump out water, replace sodden drywall, or fix power outages.  But we still want to help those suffering from the storm, so we’re raising funds.  This is a list of authors who plan to donate their royalties from the next two weeks to the Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund, the United Way Hurricane Sandy Relief Fund, or hurricane relief charity of personal choice.  Some of the books have particular meaning in this situation, and I’ve noted that when possible.  Links are set to Amazon, but this fundraiser applies wherever you purchase the book, ebook or audiobook.

These efforts represent only the individuals involved, not Austen Authors as a group.  In fact, we’d be thrilled if other authors from outside the blog joined in!  We’ve put the list here only as a convenience to readers.

Very generous, Ladies! I applaud your efforts! Now let me help by going shopping and buying what I do not already own.

  • Don’t have a new book out, hence no royalties, but I will donate, and I applaud you all for your imagination and generosity!

That’s just awesome! I went and bought the couple of those that I didn’t already own.

  • Debra says:

Thank you. I live in Bergen County NJ, a very hard hit area. I can tell you first hand the help is appreciated. I was blessed to just have been in the cold and dark for 4 1/2 days but I personally know many that were not as lucky. I know that I appreciate things a little more like a hot cup of tea, a warm meal and the simply task of doing laundry, Even reading was only able to be done until a certain time of day since batteries were saved for flashlights and could not be used carelessly. Thank you again from a very grateful reader.

    • Debra, I can’t imagine what that experience must be like. 4 1/2 days is a very long time to be cold and in the dark, even more so when you have no idea how long it will last. The people of Bergen County deserve far more help than we can give, but we’re glad to do what we can.

  • Audra says:

Ladies, Thank you all so much… Those along the north and south shores of Long Island, major parts of NYC and the New Jersey shore will be in need of supplies of all kinds. One of my own cousins was among those who lost their house. Thanks again for your generous donations. They will definitely be put to good use. Let me just close by saying how touched I am at the well wishes and concern shown over the last week+ on FB etc. We are helping each other dig out, especially the areas noted above, where many people lost everything but life & limb…

I’ll be shopping for sure to aid in your efforts.

  • Sophia Rose says:

I am glad about this. I live in NJ and my town didnt get hit hard. and I cant even imagine how the shore is like. Ive gone to seaside heights since I was a child on vacations. I have never seen this muchh devastation to places i know and grew up with.

To the authors contributing money to Red Cross etc. Thank you for doing this. ( I ordered 3 books today.)

  • I lived in lower NYC years ago, as well as vacationing in NJ often. I have numerous friends and family in the area. I am also concerned about my home state of West Virginia. Three feet of snow is some area are collapsing buildings and homes. It’s a different kind of devastation, but total destruction just the same. I pray the predicted storm for this coming week does not make matters worse.

  • JuneA** says:

Thank you all for your donations…I’m going to buy my Christmas present to me from Hubs

Prayers and lots more prayers for Sandy & snow victims!!

  • A wonderful gesture! If my books were making money, I would be right there with you all! Love & Mercy, John Emil Augustine

  • Lúthien84 says:

I would gladly help to purchase some books that I do not yet own. I have one in mind so far but figuring which website to choose since Amazon does not work for me. Maybe I’ll check out B&N site.
