Heather Celebrates the launch of Fitzwilliam Darcy Rock Star
It’s my launch day for Fitzwilliam Darcy Rock Star! To celebrate, I’m giving away three signed copies of my book and a fourth prize of my homemade Lavender Soap. To enter, leave a comment. You have until 11:59pm on Tuesday, September 13, 2011 to enter. And because it’s my first book and I want to celebrate- I will mail one book worldwide. If you are in a country other than the US or Canada, please mention it in your comment, so you can get in the special worldwide drawing. (The other 2 books and soap will be US & Canada addresses only.)
I joined Austen Authors when it started a year ago, and I’ve spent most of this year apologizing for not having a book I could donate and feeling a little bit like the poor relative amongst all these accomplished and published ladies (and Jack). But no more! Today I’m so very happy to talk about the release of my first book, Fitzwilliam Darcy Rock Star. Look, there’s the cover. Isn’t it pretty?
Fitzwilliam Darcy Rock Star (here after known as FDRS) is a modern retelling of Pride and Prejudice, in which Darcy is a world famous guitarist for the group Slurry. Charles Bingley (vocals & bass) and Richard Fitzwilliam (drums) make up the rest of the group. While they are highly successful, they’ve had troubles with concert tours. Their current tour just finished the Asian leg and is ready to hit North America, but they’ve lost their opening act and rumors are going around about how difficult they are to work with.
Darcy ends up hiring an up and coming girl group called Long Borne Suffering, made up of Elizabeth and Jane Bennet and Charlotte Lucas. These women are serious, talented artists and are hoping this tour will be their big break. But will it break them?
Since this is an Austen blog, I probably don’t need to tell you much more about the plot. You all know about proud, aloof Darcy and headstrong, determined Lizzy. We can skip that, so instead lets talk about some stuff you might not know:
5 Lesser Known Facts about Fitzwilliam Darcy Rock Star
5: This sounds kinda familiar, did you published this before?
I originally post this story as Slurry on the Hyacinth Garden many years ago. In fact many of the random characters that pop up are people from the garden who let me ‘borrow’ them. It was also on my page on Austen Interludes for a long, long, long time.
4: Wasn’t there songs?
Yes, there were. When I wrote Slurry, I used popular songs in the story. When it was published, I was unable to include them, and wrote lyrics of my own. However, there is a published playlist titled ‘Fitzwilliam Darcy Rock Star’ on itunes, where you can find the missing songs.
3: Tell something you haven’t been asked about yet on your blog tour.
Can we talk about Wickham a bit? When I was plotting out FDRS I asked myself “Why did Wickham seduce Lydia in Pride and Prejudice? Was it simply because it she was there (the lazy answer) or was it to get back at Darcy? (Figuring if he sullied her Darcy would never be able to marry Elizabeth) I’m still not sure, because Austen doesn’t tell us. Clearly Darcy believes it was to get back at him, but Darcy’s not an unbiased source.
For FDRS I went with the ‘he’s getting back at Darcy’ answer, and have him target Elizabeth, because it will hurt Darcy way more than Lydia, who’s hardly in the book. (Sorry, Lydia) In P&P Wickham motivates Darcy to step out of his comfort zone, in FDRS he’s forces Darcy to face some hard facts about himself.
2: You know a bunch of random facts about the characters that didn’t get into the book, right?
Oh, yes.
Spill
Lets see, Darcy’s left handed. Richard’s personal worth is higher than Darcy’s. Charlotte’s actually a better drummer than Richard. Richard has an apartment suite in Trump Towers, but he mostly lives in Darcy’s loft. Darcy only drinks green tea and never coffee. Georgiana is going to major in software design and programming. Wickham … no, I’ve talked about him enough.
1: What other stuff can you tell us?
I’m blogging all over the Internet this month about FDRS. Please join me on my blog tour and I promise to share more fun and interesting stories. I’m thinking about having Slurry Grind Tour t-shirts designed and made up, if there’s an interest.
Finally, I want to thank all the people who helped me write my story and become a published author. This is such a huge milestone in my life, and I could not have done it without a fantastic community providing information when I needed it, and supporting me all the way. Thank you!

Congratulations! I can’t wait to read it!!
Congratulations, Heather!!!! What a wonderful time for you to see it finally in print! May Mr. Darcy Rock Star sell a gazillion copies! Celebrate your day!!!
*confetti avalanche!*
Congratulations Heather! I remember reading Slurry so long ago and loving it. The vision of Fitzwilliam Darcy in tight leather pants is one that sticks with a person.
Best of luck. Sell a million!
Congratulations, Heather. I’ll be following you on your tour. As you already know, I blog about your blog tour here. I’m super duper excited everytime an AuAu member have a book launch.
Thank you for making one of your book giveaway worldwide. I’m international btw. I hope you’ll get to publish more Austen-themed books.
Luthien, your site is beautiful, and I wish I’d known about it earlier. I am so touched by the fact that you take the time to post all of our crazy blogging schedules. Thank you!
Best,
Susan
Good morning! (well, its morning here in NY)
Thanks for all the well-wishes. It’s a day I never thought would really come. I’m very happy.
Luthien: You are awesome! Thanks so much for the page tracking my blog tour. I’m getting so blogged out, I think I’m going to need it myself by the end of the month. lol!
You can’t see it, but Im dancing around my kitchen today.
YES! T-shirts would so awesome! I’d proudly sport that and when people ask “who’s Slurry?” I’d say “Only the sexiest and hottest band in literature!” LOL!
Best wishes for a fantastic blog tour, Heather!
Congratulations on the book.
I have read mixed review on it so far but I like to make up my own mind about things so please enter me in the giveaway.
I am an International entry (South Africa)
Thanks.
Carol T
Reviewers don’t know nothing. LOL! Never listen to them.
I stopped paying much attention to reviewers…I have read books and then later looked at the negative reviewer comments and was completely irritated because I loved the book, the characters, the way it was written, etc. Happened more than once, so I never let the reviews set me off a book. Just that person’s opinion. Drives me nuts.
Congratulations, HL! My copy is on its way from Amazon. Soon I’ll have your book in my hot little hands. Can’t wait!
Debbie
Meredith: the tagline used to be:
“The Greatest Rock Band that Never Existed”
lol.
Congratulations, Heather! The wait is over–for good! Best wishes for you and FDRS!
Heather, I don’t usually read modern P&P stories; but yours has been an exception. I’m a ‘rocker chick’ from way, way, way back; and, like Vera said, I hope you sell a gazillion copies … and that they make a movie!
Who would be in your dream cast?
Joanne
I think this is a very interesting concept and look forward to reading it! Congrats on your launch, all the best wishes for high numbers!!
Heather, do you know that Fitzwilliam Darcy Rock Star (when it was posted online as Slurry) was one of the first pieces of modern Austen-inspired fiction I read, and the very first one I fell in love with? And I mean in LOVE! This is such a wonderful, exciting concept, and I’m so happy Sourcebooks recognized that. I can’t tell you how many times I read it over the years (minus the last one), and missed it when it was taken down. Wishing you all the success this title deserves! Congratulations!
Oh, and did somebody say t-shirts? Yes, please! (I’d like to order a nice fitted one right now!)
Best,
Susan
PS: I’m watching the clock so I can drive to B&N this morning after the rush hour’s over. My daughter came home with a supply list amendment to her original school supply list and I had to spend an hour in line at Staples after homework and dinner, rather than pick up FDRS at B&N. (Seriously! It was an HOUR – I timed it – and it was absolutely INSANE! And the whining… Oh, wait, that was mostly me.)
Congratulations on your first book! I look forward to reading about their tour — and following you on yours.
Congratulations Heather! I am so excited about reading this and I vote YES on the tshirts! I loved reading all your little-known facts about the characters.

In my rocky past, I was a grunt in the Air Force. I picked up a crude saying about opinions that works well in situations like this one. No, I am not going to say it. The Web is forever and my granddaughter might well discover this post some day.
You have lots of happy readers, focus on them.
Happy launch, Heather.
Heather, I am so excited for you! Your baby is coming to fruition.
Do I want a Slurry T-shirt? HECK YES! I want a Long Borne Suffering T-shirt too! I want more than one of each. Love the tag line
Congratulations, I hope you sell lots & lots of novels.
Like Susan, this is one of the first moderns I read. And I was so thrilled with it. Every time I hear the artists that you put in your online version on the radio I think of this story. So happy for you!!!
Now I’m off to check out Luthien’s blog.
HUGE Congrats, Heather!!
Amazon has shipped my copy, and I look forward to reading it.
Congratulations, Heather. Have fun on your blog tour.
You are all So Sweet! Aw, I feel the love.
Meredith, Susan, Monica & Trez: T-shirts is it! Somewhere I have a list of all the cities on the tour with the dates & everything.
Susan K: I’m ignoring my critics. I know people enjoy my stories, and that’s all that matters to me.
Joanne: I put together a cast for one of the blogs. I don’t have a Lizzy or Darcy, because they’re like real people in my head, and it’s kinda like asking to ‘find someone to play your mom.’ My mom is my mom, no one else could be her. But the rest: I like Ryan Gosling for Bingley, because he can be both athletic and goofy. I like Chris Cornell from Audioslave to be Richard Fitzwilliam, because they’re both hot and both know something about addiction. Jane’s always been physically based on Gwen Stefani, I even stole her wedding dress for Jane, but I’d kinda like her 10 yrs younger. (Sorry, Gwen) and for Charlotte I need someone who can do an ‘Anne Eliot’ start out very plain and unremarkable, but by the end of the movie become quite physically interesting. I like Michele Williams for that, because she’s such a chameleon.
Carol, Debbie, Cindy, and Stephanie: Thank you!
Susan: So many people are new to my work, and they’re great, but it’s a special thrill when I hear from old Slurry fans.
Thank you everyone for the comments!!!
Chris Cornell … YES! Audioslave was one of my favourite bands.
I must hug you, Joanne. You have just reached a new level of cool with me.
This book sounds awesome! Congrats! I’d love to read this! I was a vocalist for many years for many rock bands so I’d love to read how Darcy fits in. Count me in for this giveaway please! I live in Canada. Thanks!

Haha Margaret, I didn’t know that about you.!
I like your character line up Heather.
Gwen Stefani’s voice just keeps getting in my head and I can’t picture it.
Never thought of Gosling as Bingley but I think that fits well. Chris Cornell – yup! Michele Williams, if she had darker hair she would look like a younger you
Really excited about the T’s.
I have only ever read one modern Austen version… but this sounds awesome. Congrats and I would love to win a copy
I love my rock music and to combine my love of pride and prejudice with rock is a dream!!
Oh also I am based in the UK and I am staring as Jane Austen’s brothers home right now
Kris
I noticed this book in Amazon.com suggestions and read the description. Love to see authors give us one more way to enjoy P & P and I love how your imagination worked to do it. Congrats! on the ‘novel’ (pun intended) idea. I think this will be a good read when I get through what I am reading now.
Looking forward!
Sundee
It’s so exciting to see FDRS finally available for everyone to read! I know it’s going to be a great success. Congrats, Heather!
Congratulations, Heather. It’s fabulous that your book is finally out there! It’s such an original take on P&P!
Enjoy the launch and I hope the book finds many many fans as it deserves!
I just love the idea of *my* Fitzwilliam Darcy as a rock star and in tight leather pants. For that alone I thank you, Heather… looking forward to reading the book!
I didn’t realize this was your debut, Heather! CONGRATULATIONS! And I’ll definitely need to get a copy–I giggled through your three paragraph description.
Congratulations! This book sounds like a very fun and interesting take on P&P! I never really thought of these characters as being in a band together, but it sounds like it works really well.
Long Borne Suffering, I love the name of the girl band!
Congratulations on your book launch Heather Lynn! What a great cover! Hope you enjoy your blog tour – I am sure it will be a success. Books, t-shirts, play-lists – oh, yes!
Congratulations Heather! I was going through this exactly one year ago and know how you feel!
Thanks for the opportunity….especially WORLDWIDE!!!!! This is Australia calling!
The kindle version must have been released early because my pre-order was delivered on Tuesday and I’ve already read it. Loved the book and the way you moved the characters to the 21st century. Wow! I agree – I’ve always thought Darcy was left-handed! (being a lefty myself) Thanks for taking my favorite story and having some real fun with it.
And yes, I want a t-shirt!
I wish you luck on your book’s world tour. Congrats on the release of your first book. Always remember “for some to love your book others must hate it” (I heard that from JK Rowlings) that is the nature of writing. It sounds wonderful and if I don’t win a book I will definitely have to download it.
I may do that anyway so I have it in both formats. LOL
Margaret: My husband is from Canada. Thanks for commenting.
Trez: LOLOL!!! Thank you so much for my laugh of the day. *Snort* I really, really, REALLY don’t look anything like Michele Williams. Wish I did, but, no.
Kris: Is this a house that JA stayed? Which brother?
Sundee: I hope you enjoy it.
Abigail: This would NEVER have happened without you. Thank you!
Monica, Karen, Alyssa: Thanks! I am in the best company with you.
Lisa Lynn: Its one of those thing where once you start thinking about it, you can’t stop and it kinda snowballs into 400+ pages.
Georgie: People either love or hate the band names. Clearly I like puns.
Kate: thank you! It’s been a thrill.
Kara: Thanks for the support.
Helen: I felt bad when I heard the overseas versions were being delayed. I want to get Rock Star Darcy world wide!
Susan: Yes, the kindle went out early and I think they started shipping on Saturday (?). I’m so glad you enjoyed it!
Kim: That’s excellent advice. Thanks!
I’d love to enter the giveaway – another WORLDWIDE (Australia). Thanks for including us international junkies !!!
Congrats on your first publishing launch – I’ve read whatever I could get hold of on your website and enjoyed, so looking forward to this one.
It is OFFICIAL; congratulations!!!!
So much to discuss; so many spoliers I refuse to reveal!
Darcy & rock& roll??????
you got me!!!
good luck to you on FDRS!!!
Congratulations, Heather! What a beautiful day for a launch!!
I am so excited! (My preorder should arrive tomorrow!)
I am looking forward to see what you do with the lyrics. I will forever think of your book when I hear Blurry! This was my first modern P&P I read and has remained my favorite!
I am doing a virtual dance in the kitchen for you!
Looking forward to it!
Believe it or not your book is on back order @ bn.com
Congrats looking forward to reading it…
I read all the stories on Austeninterlude about a yr & 1/2 ago, wondering if I already read the story
SuzeJA
Congratulations on your book launch. It sounds great and i can’t wait to read it.
Congrats. How exciting for you. Like some other commenters I think this was the first or one of the first modern P&Ps I read long ago (in HG). It was amazing. I remember snickering over LBS and just generally loving the story. I will have to add this to my book shopping list.
BTW, +1 on the t-shirts (cafepress?). Any chance you are publishing your other story or did I miss that?
Congratulations Heather! I have LOVED “SLURRY” for many years now and have read it at least 10 times. You took a truly unique approach to our favorite book and it worked beautifully. I’m so happy you can now enjoy the success of a published author “with a book with a bullet”!
And yes, I want a Slurry t-shirt and a Long Bourne Suffering t-shirt too. Maybe Cafe Press would be interested in producing these for you.
Kat: Thank you! I’ve always had a sweet spot in my heart for the Aussie Austen fans.
Kerri: Thank you, and yes, FDRS is surprisingly spoilerific. lol.
Cyn: He’s a guy who’s been through a lot (lost of his parents) and he uses music to deal with it. And then more happens too him, and so the circle turns.
Becky: Are you one of the Flavors? There were a lot of Beckys and I can’t keep you all straight.
Angie: Enjoy!
Suze: That’s amazing news. I heard an indie distributer was backordered this morning. Whoa. And a year and a half would have been right around the time I pulled it. Do you remember Slurry? A Darcy in black leather pants? You probably would have remembered that. So there you go.
Lindy: Thank you! I hope you enjoy it.
Dee: Hey! It’s great to see the HG people. Thank you so much for the well-wishes. L&PGTW is currently on my work table.
Rae: Thank you! T-shirts are on my to-do list. I purposefully retained the rights with them in mind.
A belated congratulations, Heather Lynn! Your book sounds wonderful!
Congratulations, I’m looking forward to reading your first novel! I think this will be a completely new take on P&P retellings! Thanks for having this contest as well.
Maggie
Congratulations, Heather!
Like many others, Slurry was one of the first JAFFs I ever read!
I downloaded FD, Rock Star to my Kindle the day it was released and have thoroughly enjoyed re-reading your fabulous story!
OMG, Heather!! While I was reading the book, I was totally thinking that you NEED to have t-shirts made up!! I would so buy one!! LOVE IT!!
I love the tagline: “The Greatest Rock Band that Never Existed!!” And I too would also buy a LBS t-shirt!
Loved the book!! It took me back to my high school days and early college days when I was very much into the rock and punk rock scene and went to concerts all the time!
Can’t wait to read it!
Congratulations! You just have to be beside yourself with excitement. I have been out of “internet” range but now I am back to the real world your book is waiting on me to download…I am off to start reading it now.
Heather, My copy just arrived today and it is more gorgeous in person! I am so excited to have it in my hot little hands.
(I am not a flavor, but I could be……)
Congrats again!! Keep us updated on the t-shirts!!
Yes, Becky. I might not mind being a flavor either!
You are both bad, bad women. Imagine, wanting to have semi-annoymous sex with Richard Fitzwilliam. I’m shocked!
I have always had a bit of a thing for Colonel (Richard)Fitzwilliam!
Congratulations! I have been reading a lot of awesome reviews and posts about FDRS and I can’t wait to read it for myself.
Congrats on the launch Heather!! I’m looking forward to reading FDRS. Love the name of the girl band… Long Borne Suffering and the tagline about the Greatest Band that Never Existed. Both would make awesome t-shirts.
Congratulations! Love your book cover and know that readers will enjoy this book immensely. A classic modern P&P!
Congratulations on the book Heather!!! I can’t wait to read it!
I love the bit that didn’t make it in the book. Would love to see a list of these on your blog or even a sequel!
Congratulations, Heather! I love Slurry, and can’t wait to read Rock Star!
