Emma definitely gets her comeuppance this week with the arrival of Mrs. Augusta Elton. She is one of my favorite Jane Austen antagonists, and I love all the awkwardness that goes on between her and Emma, especially after they’ve known each other for a while and it becomes obvious that Mr. Elton has shared the whole sad story of Emma’s snobbery with his wife.
These chapters also contain one of my favorite exchanges between Emma and Mr. Knightley, in which she finally asks him whether he has any romantic attachment to Jane Fairfax. It is one of Emma‘s most swoon-worthy passages. Shall we read it together?
