Dancing with the Stars, Austen Night

I must admit, I’m not much of a fan of reality television. I don’t particularly care who gets voted off the island or the stage, and watching it all somehow seems voyeuristic, even though everyone involved knows you’re watching and is perfectly fine with it. There is, as there always must be, an exception. I do watch Dancing with the Stars. Anyone familiar with the show knows that DWTS is on twice a week. Monday night is dance night and Tuesday night is elimination night, where one couple (a professional dancer paired with a celebrity) is eliminated from the season’s competition. I don’t watch Tuesday night–too slow and too painful. I’m just in it for the dancing, and I know that I’ll find out next Monday who’s missing. (Or, there’s always the possibility that I won’t even notice….)

Dancing with the Stars tracks the progress of thirteen (or so) dance partner pairs over the course of a season, in which they learn and then perform a series of ballroom dances in a competition-style setting on live TV. My favorites are the quick step for its lightness and exuberance, the Paso Doble for the drama and flair, and the Argentine tango with all those little kicks! The Viennese waltz, too, is lovely to watch. So romantic, flowing, and intimate. Sigh…

Every now and then they do a special night of dancing: Classical Night, Motown Night, etc. Well, after Sally posted about planning the Netherfield ball, I couldn’t help but imagine a few of these dances subbing in for the pivotal English Country Dances in our beloved Pride & Prejudice.

Imagine, if you will…[and be patient through the extra bits in the videos]

Elizabeth and Darcy acting out the passionate but confrontational Paso Doble, with its sweeping skirts, attack poses, and proud tone. Some things that should not have been said may never have surfaced…

Or what about Elizabeth and Mr. Collins dancing the Argentine tango, and a few of those sassy little kicks just…perhaps…going askew…? This one probably has too many lifts though…Mr. Collins would likely drop her. Or, I suppose Elizabeth could offer to lead…

Or Jane and Bingley in a sweeping, romantic, beautiful waltz that leaves no opportunity for misconceptions…

And I can’t leave Wickham out of the party! For him, a jaunty quick step–keep moving, stay one step ahead of your enemies, and maybe you’ll never get caught…

Just imagine a roomful of Netherfield’s gentry tangoing with red roses tight in their teeth and bodies pressed tightly together. The gossip over tea the morning after would be something else entirely! Ballgowns would be swishier and showier, and romance would definitely be in the air! There’s a retelling for you…

Typically, the dance routines act out a little story: a forbidden romance, good girl gone bad, etc. Wouldn’t it be fun if each couple was given a scene from an Austen novel and allowed to choose their dance, music, and costumes? I would be positively glued to the set.

If you could choose, which scene from which novel would you choose to see portrayed through ballroom dance? If you like, you can specify the dancers too. Enjoy!

Oh this is such a great idea for a post! I don’t often watch DWTS but I do watch So You Think You Can Dance. I love seeing all the different genres and seeing people excel in ones you don’t think they’ll be good at. I love P&P stories where Darcy dances voluntarily (ok, or perhaps a little reluctantly). He and Lizzy doing a Paso Doble – yum! All your examples were great.

  • This is wonderful, and the notion is hilarious! Okay, I would love to see a Paso Doble with Mr. Collins proposing to Lizzy and she refusing over and over and over!

    *giggle*

I don’t watch reality TV much either, though I do love Hoarders. Now that would be the anti-DWTS, right?

    Very fun post, Alyssa.

  • Clever post! Thanks for making me smile. I can’t think of a particular scene but I can envision Lydia Bennet doing the polka. I guess she’s still stuck in my mind a little bit from yesterday!

  • Since I’m a fan of DWTS too, I thoroughly enjoyed your post, Alyssa! I got very excited about Classical night last week, when the opening number featured powdered wigs and knee breeches, but the Regency flair ended there. If you were watching this past Monday, you saw the three-some dances (not at all kinky btw, for those who weren’t watching – shame on you! ). How about Marianne Dashwood between Col. Brandon and Willoughby for a Paso or Tango?

    • I did watch Monday night, Shannon, but I typed up this post on Monday afternoon… The three-way dances were intense, and I must say, I LOVE your suggestion!

I watched the original season and then haven’t watched it since. I do however agree with all your suggestions. I thought the post was incredible. I love to dance and I do know how to do most of those mentioned. (didn’t say I was good at any)

Love all the passionate dances too. Maybe a three way Tango between Darcy, Elizabeth, and Wickam, with Darcy winning the girl of course!

  • Alyssa, this was such a great post! I know nothing about dancing, but thanks to you my head is now filled with images of Mr. Collins executing various dips and twirls! Can you imagine Charlotte dancing with him? I’d love to see them perform just about anything. :)

I have never watch Dancing with the Stars because I don’t usually watch reality tv shows unless they are well made such as The Amazing Race. But Alyssa, your idea is terrific.

Hm, let’s see. I would like to see how the dancers interpret the scene where Mr Darcy first proposes to Lizzy. It should be interesting with all the tension and fiery words exchanged between them.

  • A great post, Shannon. I love your interpretations! I’ve watched So You Think You Can Dance here in the UK — which I’ve seen a few times, but not consistently. I would watch every second if there was a Regency style competition!

There was a reality show a while ago called Regency House Party. I never saw it, but have really been meaning to get hold of a DVD. Has anyone seen it?

Loved your post Alyssa! I love watching all of the Dancing and singing shows when I get time. DWTS, SO You Think You Can Dance, X Factor, The Voice etc etc
DWTS is wonderful because we get to watch so many different types of dance. I absolutely love the waltzes, they are so elegant and graceful. I also love the firey Rumba and Paso.
I would love to see Darcy & Lizzy doing the Rumba at Netherfield. Now that would be amazing! I enjoyed your clips from DWTS and my fav would have to be Bingley and Jane dancing the waltz :)

  • I LOVE DWTS! This season I have fallen behind because I am in deadline hell, but normally I am glued to the TV and have been since season 1. Ballroom dancing is fantastic to watch. Max is fantastic to watch! All those bare chests and gyrating hips? Oh baby!

I admit to being partially inspired by the dancing in the P&P movies and the dancing in DWTS when I incorporated some lusty dancing between Darcy and Lizzy into my Saga. No tangos or paso dobles, but several Austrian waltzes that got way out of hand! The scandalous ladies running Almack’s would never have allowed it, I can promise you that! Fortunately Darcy and Lizzy kept it in their bedchamber.

I’ve never gotten in to DWTS, because I’m not a big ballroom dancing fan. But I can imagine a few of the characters like Darcy and Lizzie dancing a waltz with tingling fingers and all!

  • June says:

Fun post~thanks for all the images dancing around in my head!

  • I quit watching DWTS several seasons prior because the judges twisted the scores to progress certain stars. If it is an audience vote, then accept their decisions.
