Celebrating Austen and Heyer – Regency-Style
Last Saturday I went into London – and it felt like I’d travelled back to 1811! The Royal Overseas Club near Green Park was adorned with ladies in silks and muslins, bonnets and spencers, gloves and reticules. Add some soldiers in dashing scarlet coats, and a few gentlemen in breeches and cravats, and you have the Romantic Novelists’ Association’s Regency Readers’ Day in full flow.
We were celebrating Jane Austen, of course – the 200th anniversary of the publication of Sense & Sensibility, to be precise. And we were also paying tri
bute to Georgette Heyer, who wrote wonderful Regency romances like These Old Shades and Regency Buck. I had a great time catching up with Jane Odiwe and Monica Fairview, and we shared a ‘Lydia Bennet moment’ when the soldiers came into view. Can you blame us? (Photos courtesy of Regency novelist Jan Jones.)
The day kicked off with a lively panel discussion on Sense & Sensibility – Julie Cohen kept Nicola Cornick, Beth Elliott and myself in order as we talked about the novel’s structure (it’s the same story, told twice) and characters, especially the heroes.
Jennifer Kloester talked about her new book Georgette Heyer: Biography of a Bestseller – very entertaining … Dancing instructors Mr & Mrs Rogers kept us on our toes for an hour – Mr R told us that Jane Austen gave names to only two dances in all of her novels because, quite simply, people usually made up the dances as they went along, guided by a caller … My fellow Choc Lit author Christina Courtenay and Louise Allen did a ‘Sniff ‘n’ Tell’ session all about Regency scents. Fortunately, they kept to the nicer ones – I can imagine the streets of London at the time reeking of other things! Christina made her lilac dress herself – isn’t it gorgeous?
There was a panel discussion on ‘Sex and the Georgians’ – probably best to draw a veil over James Graham’s Celestial Bed. Let’s just say he was ahead of his time … You could go on a local walk and bring Regency history to life, play parlour games and learn about Regency clothing.
Which takes me back to mid-September, and the Jane Austen Festival in Bath where I launched Persuade Me. My photos are still in my new camera – one day I will find the box and read how to upload them to the PC! In the meantime, here are someone else’s.
Aren’t the costumes beautiful? They inspired me to celebrate Jane Austen at next year’s Festival attired in my own muslin gown and bonnet!

I am so glad that when you go to these marvelous events that you share with us. The conference sounded fun and seeing everyone being dressed up and being able to participating in Regency activities would have been a hoot.
Thanks for posting!
It was lovely to see you, Juliet! It was a fabulous day-my favourite was the dancing-so much fun!
Juliet, I think any warm blooded woman would have swooned with so many officers in dashing red coats sauntering about! How lovely that you had tea with Monica and Jane – I’m jealous! I’ve been enjoying the photos of Bath, and can only imagine how wonderful both experiences were if you were fortunate enough to be part of it.
Congratulations on the success of your novels – wonderful to have won such an honor!
Best,
Susan
Definitely a swoon moment. The red coats are spectacular, and the officers very charming…
What a wonderful event! Thank you for sharing with us. I love the pictures. (Is that pink hair I see? )
Congratulations on all your success!
This sounds like it was wonderful! Thanks for sharing it with us — and you must learn how to upload your pics from your camera!
It sounds like such a wonderful time! I think the dancing would have been the most fun! I love your pictures, and the costumes are beautiful. Thanks for sharing, Juliet!
Oh, how fun! I didn’t know that the dances were made up as they went along. I’m no great dancer but it’d be so fun to learn.
Thanks for posting the pics, I’d love to see more.
Yes, I used that in The Other Mr. Darcy, and I had a couple of people asking me about it. I was glad to have the instructor reinforcing that idea, because it isn’t common knowledge for some reason.
These type of events gives new inspiration.
The costumes are wonderful, and all the activities sound quite diverting! I’ll be interested in seeing your photos, once you get them out of your camera.
That just sounds like so much fun! Thanks for sharing the pictures! I would love to get to an event like that at least once in my life. LOL The costumes are fabulous!
Thank you all for your comments! It was a wonderful day – the organisers’ hard work certainly paid off.
Thank you for the report and sharing these beautiful photos. I too would love to participate in these type of events and celebrate my love of Jane Austen and the Regency period.
Uploading photos into your PC is pretty easy. Basically, just connect your camera to PC using USB port and it will automatically be copied. It depends on the camera brand and software CD that comes with it.
What a lovely post, Juliet! An excellent summary.
I loved the experience, especially the dancing, where I was a wallflower (I’m still nursing my ex-broken leg, so I got to observe, which was tremendous fun).
I’m so glad we met up, Juliet!
What a great event and a great place to have it. I’ve been to The Royal Overseas Club but I wish I could have been there for this.
