Announcing White Soup Press!
“… as for the ball, it is quite a settled thing; and as soon as Nicholls has made white soup enough I shall send round my cards.” - Pride & Prejudice
This month has been full of surprises and gifts from Austen Authors to our readers – giveaways, sales and P&P200 posts for your enjoyment. Today’s surprise is different; it’s a present for us, one that’s been in the works for many months. Today is the 201st anniversary of the Netherfield Ball, the perfect day to unveil White Soup Press, a new publishing imprint for the authors who are part of this blog.
This idea grew out of discussion between various AuAus who were publishing independently or planning to do so in the future. Pooling our knowledge, experience, and publicity efforts was a natural next step. At White Soup Press, just as at Austen Authors, we’re committed to maintaining professional quality in our books. That means that readers can count on a White Soup Press book to be edited, copy-edited, formatted correctly, and written by an experienced and accessible author.
We’re still in the early stages of this venture. Many of the recent White Soup Press releases were published under the White Soup Press imprint, and older books are in the process of being converted to the new imprint. Five Austen Authors already have books actively for sale through WSP, with many others joining in the next year as their new books become available. The majority of WSP books are Austenesque novels, but there are original novels as well. We have modern adaptations and books set in the Regency or other historical periods, plus time travel books for those who want the best of both worlds.
While WSP is an option for any of the authors at this blog to use, it’s up to each author to decide whether and when to participate, so you won’t see every Austen Author there. I can tell you, though, that there are some great books coming up in the near future from WSP. I won’t try to mention them all, but the long-awaited Spices of Pemberley by Nina Benneton will be coming up early in 2013, Jack Caldwell has some zingers up his sleeve in Mr. Darcy Comes to Dinner, Regina Jeffers will be delighting us on Valentine’s Day with His, and fans of Sharon Lathan’s Darcy Saga are going to be in for a happy surprise with a new prequel. And yes, I’ll have a new Pemberley Variation in the spring.
That’s just the beginning! 2013 is going to be an exciting year at White Soup Press. This week on Austen Authors we’ll be sharing excerpts from White Soup Press books for your reading pleasure. In the meantime, please stop by our brand-new website and check out the initial line-up of books. There will be lots more to come!

Thanks, Meredith! It’s another new stage for Austenesque literature. We’ve seen a lot of changes in our years in this subgenre, haven’t we?
I must agree! EXCITING!!! It is a wonderful time for AuAu and their readers!!

This is exciting! Congratulations on the launch!
Thank you! And now that it’s launched, I’m looking forward to getting back to writing so that I can release a new book, too!
That is so fabulous!! Woo Hoo!! Such exciting news!! Love love the name!! That’s awesome, congrats you all!!
Thanks! Susan Adriani came up with the name after we’d developed a long list of really boring names like Netherfield Books and Steventon Press. I love it.
What a great idea! I am super-excited for you all, and for all of us readers. Can’t wait to read the new stories! I wish you much success with this new venture. <3
Thank you, Monica. It’s great to have your support.
Congrats to all. Lovely title and logo. I am all for professionally produced Austenesque books. Best wishes, LA
Thanks, LA. Susan Adriani gets credit for the name and logo. And I did finally figure out how to solve the Nook Color formatting problem.
Congradulations!! Not only is this wonderful news for you authors, but fantastic news for us readers!
Thank you!
I notice that you chose the name “White Soup” and announced this on the 26th of November, the date of the Netherfield ball, which was held as soon as there was enough white soup made. Was today’s date chosen for the announcement on purpose?
Very astute, Beatrice! We wondered how many people would put that together. That’s precisely why we chose today, because finally we have enough white soup. We’ve been working on this plan since last spring and have already quietly released a few White Soup Press books. The anniversary of the ball seemed to be the perfect day to unveil it, and since it fell during our month-long celebration, it was perfect.
Now I’m waiting to see who picks up the two subtle references in the banner image at the White Soup Press site.
I see a little tiny Darcy and Lizzy walking by the lake. And a Greek temple?
Very good, Monica! You’re two for two. My family thought no one could recognize Darcy and Lizzy because they were so small, but we know that mini-series too well! And the temple is the same one that appears in the usual Austen Authors banner – just a different view across the lake. We wanted the banners to be related but different.
Congratulations! Love the logo, website and the books! Looking forward to many more. Let the ball begin!
Thanks, Carole! I’m sure your dance card will be full.
So awesome! Congratulations! I think this is a brilliant idea! I wish you all the best in your future (and present) publications! And I intend to read as many as I can!
Thanks, Candy, for all your support!
Absolutely exciting!!
Yay, now I can have all my favorite authors in one place!
So excited about the WSP launch!!
WoW! So this was the big news. Congratulations guys!
Sounds great! I hope the books have a decent print size. I have a book called Rainy Days and the print is so small that I can’t read too much in it at a time. It’s from Meryton Press.
This is something we were talking about recently, actually. It can be a trade-off between print size and profit margin, since smaller print = fewer pages. My eyes aren’t as young as they used to be, so I try to stick to larger font size and adequate space between the lines. Happy readers are worth losing a few cents over!
This is wonderful news.
I am in awe of you, ladies, for your hard work and dedication in bringing to life White Soup Press! What an inspired and timely move. The website is beautiful, and all the upcoming books look and sound terrific. I’m excited and honored to be part of Austen Authors at this momentous juncture in history!
This sounds wonderful.
This is an exciting time at Austen Authors.
Congratulations and Good Luck on your new venture!
